In our last post, we talked about easy organic breakfast ideas. Today, let’s take a closer look at one of the foods that we mention, oatmeal. Oatmeal is a great food for breakfast for many reasons. But for a full explanation of the various kinds of oatmeal and which one is best, watch the video below:
For many people, oatmeal is a powerhouse ingredient. It’s low in calories, low in fat, high in fibre, and packed with nutrients. Oatmeal is a clean and delicious ingredient you can use in your diet.
There are several different types of oats. This article will break down the main types of oats to clear up any confusion out there.
At the top of the chain, there are oat groats. Essentially, oat groats are the whole oat with the husk removed. This groat is the least processed form of oatmeal you can find. It does tend to be a litte cheaper than other oatmeal, but it takes longer to cook ? about 15 minutes. You can buy it at the store in either a bag in the cereal section or you can find it in the bulk department. It has a nice, nutty, earthy flavor, and when it’s cooked, it looks just like a grain of rice.
Next is steel cut oats. Steel cut oats are oat groats that have been cut into two or three small pieces with a steel cut blade. Essentially, these are still an less processed form of oatmeal but they cook faster than oat groats. And because they’re cut, when they cook, the starches inside get released making a nice, hearty, nutty, creamy oatmeal. Keep in mind, steel cut oats don’t work for baking, and they don’t work in the microwave.
Next, we have rolled oats, also called ‘old fashioned oat’. These are the oats most people think about when they think about oatmeal. Rolled oat is oat groats that have been steamed, rolled out, steamed again and then toasted. This oat is the kind of oatmeal that works for baking or oat flour. They cook quickly on the stove or on the microwave. Take half a cup of rolled oats, add one cup of water, put in a microwave for two minutes, then stir with your favorite fruit to make a quick, clean oatmeal breakfast.
After rolled oats, there are instant oats or quick cook oats. Instant oats are rolled oats that have been pre-cooked so that when you cook them they heat up faster. These cook up in about one or two minutes. Rolled oats have a better flavor and texture, but you may want the convenience and speed of instant oats.
One type of oats that are not recommended are packaged, flavored oats because they can have much sugar in it ? up to 15 grams of sugar in one packet. One teaspoon of sugar is four grams, so fifteen is much more than you need in your oatmeal. Buy the plain oatmeal and season it with what you like.
Oatmeal is also a great food if you’re on a diet. It’s a recommended breakfast food in the Beta Switch diet that is made specifically for women and you can find it over at the website http://betaswitch.co.
